# PAL.NET Overview

PAL.NET is AIC's licensed .NET Platform Access Layer for supported Palantir Foundry, AIP, and customer Ontology APIs.

This book is the practical guide to using the framework. It covers application setup, dependency injection, credentials and licensing, generated platform clients, higher-level data clients, Ontology access, streaming, retries, diagnostics, host integration, compatibility tooling, testing, and release operations.

## What this book assumes

* .NET 10 SDK is installed.
* You have an authorised PAL.NET package or source checkout.
* You have a Palantir enrollment, the required API scopes, and an approved authentication mechanism.
* Your deployment has a PAL.NET entitlement. Registration can be configured without a licence, but API execution is deliberately fail-closed.

## Start here

{% step %}

## Read Getting started

Read [Getting started](/getting-started.md) for the smallest working application.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Configure authentication and licensing

Follow [Configuration](/foundations/configuration.md) and [Authentication and licensing](/foundations/authentication-and-licensing.md) before connecting to a real enrollment.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Choose a client

Choose a client: [Platform API](/using-pal.net/platform-api.md), [Ontology](/using-pal.net/ontology.md), [Datasets](/using-pal.net/datasets.md), [SQL](/using-pal.net/sql.md), or [AIP Agents](/using-pal.net/aip-agents.md).
{% endstep %}

{% step %}

## Harden your deployment

Use [Advanced transport](/using-pal.net/advanced-transport.md) and [Security and operations](/engineering-and-delivery/security-and-operations.md) to harden a deployment.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Product boundary

PAL.NET is a runtime SDK and tooling set. It is not a replacement for Palantir permissions, a customer Ontology, an identity provider, or an application host. The SDK carries the caller's authenticated identity and applies local configuration, licensing, transport, retry, diagnostics, and serialization rules around each operation.

The repository also contains AIC Foundation host and client projects. Those are documented in [Hosting and client integration](/engineering-and-delivery/hosting-and-client-integration.md); they compose PAL.NET but are not required when using the SDK directly.
